Another beautiful day ahead! After breakfast check out and drive to the caves. Vardzia cave monastery was established in the 12th c., during the Georgian Golden Age. The caves are cut in soft Vulcanic ache layer and are spread on thirteen levels on the cliff over the river Mtkvari. We follow up and down steps inside the dark echoing corridors connecting fifth floor to eight. Dwellings, storages, refectories, wine cellars, 15 churches and prayers could accommodate garrison. The famous frescos of Queen Tamar – the first woman king and her father is well preserved in the main church. Excursion lasts about one hour and half.
Continue to Samtskhe-Javakheti region along Kura river gorge. Very picturesque area! A Lot of mediaeval fortresses are all around here: Vanis Kvabebi and Zemo Vardzia – the most secret ones, Tmogvi – the biggest one, Khertvisi – the best preserved one, Atskhuri – the smaller one and Akhaltsikhe – newly renovated and the most developed one for contemporary life.
Akhaltsikhe fort integrates hotel, restaurants, medieval castle, amphitheater, churches, watchtowers, a museum and a mosque. We have guided excursion here about 40 minutes.
