Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe Trip

A private full-day tour. Mtskheta is a historical town and ancient capital, remarkable for two UNESCO World Heritage monuments - Svetitskhoveli and Jvari. Gori is a small town that lies at the heart of Kartli province - the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. Last but not least, Uplistsikhe is an ancient cave town that was once an important political, religious, and cultural center of pre-Christian Kartli.

Sights to Visit

Day to day

Morning pick-up from the hotel. First stop is at Jvari monastery located on top of a mountain near Mtskheta. Here we have introductory story of the area and wonderful panorama over the confluence of two rivers Aragvi and Mtkvari, Armazi Mountains and the town of Mtskheta.
Afterwards drive towards Gori - the town that lies at the center of Kartli province. Gori was an important military stronghold in the Middle Ages. At the foot of a sand-stone hill stands the medieval Fortress Tskhra-kara (“the Nine-gated”). We do a short walk around and continue to the museum of J. Stalin.
Excursion in the museum of the Soviet leader will take about 30 minutes. Museum consists 3 sites: main building contains items related to his life, the house where he was born, and his personal railway carriage.
Afterwards have a lunch at the restaurant “Shin da Gori” located nearby.

Next place to visit is the ancient cave town Uplistsikhe (trans. "Fortress of the Lord"), an ancient town carved in rock and located in 14 kilometers east of the town Gori. The echoing halls, long meandering corridor-streets, chambers for pagan worship and even the remains of the oldest theatre in Georgia, all carved into the rocky plateau are waiting for you to be explored.
After completing the tour in Uplistsikhe we are going back to Tbilisi. We are going to pass through Mtskheta, and pay a visit to its second UNESCO World Heritage Site - Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Finally, take a walk in historical part of town, enjoy relaxing evening and taste local sweets at the souvenir shopping rows. Evening arrival to the hotel.
