This tour takes you to Kutaisi – one of the largest cities of Georgia. En-route to Kutaisi, make a stop at town Gori, and visit the house-museum of Joseph Stalin, that preserves the personal artefacts related to his life. Head to the ancient cave town of Uplistsikhe, which dates back to the 1st millennium BC. Enjoy sightseeing of the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kutaisi – Gelati Academy and Monastery, and Bagrati Cathedral. Travel to Sataplia Nature Reserve to see the footprints of a dinosaur and experience the natural beauty of Colchic forests.
Morning pick-up from the hotel. We are heading to the west. First visit the house-museum of Joseph Stalin, located in town Gori. Museum exhibits Stalin’s house – a wooden hut, study room from Kremlin, and various manuscripts, paintings, gifts and other personal belongings.
Afterwards drive to Uplistsikhe cave town. Uplistsikhe translates as “the fortress of God”, and is one of the oldest discovered settlements in the region. Uplistsikhe town was an important trading center linking Byzantium, India and China. Nowadays archaeological excavations uncovered several layers dating from Early Iron Age to the late middle ages.
Have a lunch near the sight.
Drive to Kutaisi passing through the Rikoti Pass. Kutaisi is the ancient capital and third largest city of Georgia. Take a walk through Kutaisi old town.
Dinner and overnight in Kutaisi.
After breakfast in the morning head to Kutaisi farmer’s market, where large assortment of local products, fruit, vegetables, homemade sweets and delicious Imeretian cheese are sold.
Afterwards start sightseeing tour of Kutaisi city surroundings. First, head to Gelati Academy and Monastery complex built in the 12thc. The complex is included in UNESCO World Heritage sites list. Established in the Georgian Golden Age, for a long time Gelati Monastery used to be one of the main cultural and intellectual centers of Georgia.
From Gelati, continue to Bagrati Cathedral, dating back to the 11th c. This monument is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Cathedral is located on an elevated hill, overlooking Kutaisi.
En-route lunch.
Next stop is at Tskaltubo spa-resort, famous for its mineral waters with natural temperature of 33-35°C. Take a look at the bathhouse that was often visited by Joseph Stalin.
From Tskaltubo head to Sataplia Caves and Nature Reserve, and take a walking tour. This place is famous for the fossilized footprints of a dinosaur that are well preserved in one of the caves. In addition, colorful visual effects and lights enrich the natural beauty of Sataplia caves.
Drive back to Tbilisi.
