Kutaisi State Historical Museum

Established in National Bank of Georgia former building, Niko Berdzenishvili Kutaisi State History Museum was founded in 1912-22, housing more than 200,000 unique cultural and historical artifacts of Western Georgia starting from the 9th- 8th century B.C. up to late medieval times.

Visitors can observe permanent exhibitions displayed on two floors. Approximately 800 works, 40 000 books are saved in the library. The most remarkable collections include Antiquity and Bronze Age artefacts discovered at the territory of Western Georgia, rare items of Georgian, Byzantine, Roman and Oriental history, an impressive collection of old epigraphic monuments, illuminated books, and Georgian manuscripts-ethnographic materials, samples of goldsmith art and machinery, old enamel artistry and beautiful ornaments, leather, textiles, glass works, and woodcuts.

The highlight of the History Museum is the Golden Fund - Gold Treasury section, displaying crosses and icons decorated with precious metals and jewels, including a large, assuming miraculous icon that used to reside in Bagrati Cathedral. Because of the Soviet occupation and the closure of churches and monasteries, many icons and holy treasuries were brought here.

Kutaisi Historical Museum is also known for publishing nnewspapers: Kutaisi Museum’s Manuscripts, Kutaisi’s Archaeology, Antique materials from Kutaisi Museum, Museum’s Chronicles, Museum News, What the Museum items tell us, Georgian Churches Treasure, From the History of South Caucasus Railway, Gelati Treasure, The Gospel (manuscript, 1060) and an annual magazine Khidi (Bridge).

Kutaisi State History Museum with an extensive research library and laboratory, is considered to be Georgia’s one of the most important scientific-research institutions, preserving the Treasury of West Georgia, Kutaisi and surrounding area.
