Royal Khvanchkara Wine Company
The Western region of Georgia - Racha has an exceptional place in the history of Georgian viticulture. Winemaking in Racha is unimaginable without distinguished species of grapes Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli, from which one of the most famous Georgian red semisweet wine - Khvanchkara is made.
The company Royal Khvanchkara was founded in 2015, although the history of Rachian winemaking dates back to the 1870s when local nobles Konstantine and Kaikhosro Kipiani started producing legendary Kipiani Wine from Aleksandrouli grapes. After years of perfecting the technology Kipiani wine expanded into the international market in 1897 and won the Grand Prix at an international wine exhibition in Ostend, Belgium in 1907. Experts have even compared Kipiani Wine with Burgundy wines for its velvet and tender taste. Later, newly established Soviet government renamed Kipiani Wine to Khvanchkara, with the purpose of hiding achievements of the Georgian aristocratic family.
In order to increase production at the Imeretian kings’ summer residence, a new wine factory was built in Ambrolauri town in 1929-1947, which produced 300,000 bottles of Rachan and Lekhkhuman wines each year.
Today, Ambrolauri is considered as the birthplace of wine Khvanchkara. In the city center stands the Square with a Bottle - 18 meters tall wine bottle statue. 200 meters away from the monument is the factory Royal Khvanchkara, which continues growing and honoring unique ancient traditions.
The vineyards of Royal Khvanchkara are stretched over 18 hectares in five Racha villages: Sadmeli`s Chala, Zhoshkha, Qoveli, Tola, and Chkvishi, thoroughly cared for. The area ranges from 450 to 75 meters above sea level and has a humid climate. Ideal locations of the vineyards and advanced technologies contribute to producing naturally semi-sweet and classical dry red wines, characterized by a deep ruby color, distinctive aroma, harmonious taste, and specific fruity tints of strawberry and raspberry. These are the premium wines produced from five select grape varieties grown in the vineyards: Khvanchkara (red semi-sweet), Aleksandrouli (red dry), rare for Georgia wine Tetra (white semi-dry), Mujuretuli, Usakhelauri, Tsolikouri, Ojaleshi, Dzelshavi-Saperavi and Tvishi. Recently, the company added two more exceptional wines to their list: Royal Reserve Khvanchkara and Royal Reserve Usakhelauri.
The chief winemaker of the Royal Khvanchkara company is Lado Uzunashvili - internationally acknowledged professional experienced in Australia, who has been working in the industry since 1987. Wines created by him have won more than 150 golden, silver, and bronze medals at various global contests. Royal Khvanchkara wines always stand out with classic Georgian character, harmonizing centuries-old traditions of Rachan wine making with modern dynamics.
