This tour leads us to Eastern Georgia - Lower Kartli, to explore archaeological site of Dmanisi located approximately 85 km southwest of Tbilisi in the Mashavera River Valley, on the territory of the medieval town of Dmanisi, in one of the most fertile and beautiful regions of Georgia.

Dmanisi was an important city from early medieval times. It was here that the caravan routes to Bysantium, Armenia and Persia converged. Archaelogical excavations in Dmanisi have now evolved into an international research project under the auspices of Georgian Academy of Sciences, with participants of colleagues from Germany, USA, France and Spain. Today they have recovered more than twenty hominid remains in Dmanisi. Scientists concluded that hominids had already settled in the Caucasus 1.8 million years ago; so this is the oldest recovering in Eurasia. French scientists have reconstructed the skulls of woman and man so realistically that you can easily imagine them alive.

Drive to the town Bolnisi, one of the ancient settlements of the lower Kartli.
Visit one of the oldest basilicas in Georgia - Bolnisi Sioni, Tsugrugasheni Cathedral.
Lunch
Visit Dmanisi Sioni.
19:00 return to Tbilisi

Sites to visit:

Bolnisi Sioni (5th c) - three-nave basilica, its capitals and columns are decorated with geometric carvings and pictures of birds and animals. The capital of the baptistery is decorated with a cross, peacocks and a bullhead with another cross between its horns. Bolnisi Sioni has Georgia's most ancient inscriptions dating from the late 5th century.
Tsugrugasheni Cathedral (13th c) - high-domed church with ten windows in the drum of the dome, notable for rich ornamentation
Dmanisi - fortress from 10th c., archaeological site, pagan cemetery, basilica of 6th c. and remains of the royal palace.
