AD on the site of its hot mineral-water springs, the city soon developed into an important political, economic and cultural center of the Middle East. Sites to visit: Metekhi church, (5th c) presents one of the most important architectural monuments of old Tbilisi. The decoration of the church, technically well done, involves Georgian national motives and traditions. Narikala Fortress (4th c), dominates the Old Town as a most impressive architectural landmark. With its inaccessible slopes, the fortress served as a main fortification and defended the city for centuries. The site offers an excellent view of the capital. Old Sulphur Baths with curative properties were commented by numerous travelers who visited the city. The baths are founded on the spot of natural hot springs, below the ground. The domes above the earth provide for wonderful oblique illumination. Caravanserai (Tbilisi History Museum): The Museum collection contains unique objects weapons and household accessories starting from the Bronze Age. The Museum also has the masterpieces of renowned Georgian Painters. Bread bakery Sioni Cathedral, (6th c) the main cathedral of Georgia was destroyed several times because of the wars and has several construction layers. One of the Holy relics of Georgian people, cross of Saint Nino, enlightener of the country is kept in the temple. Anchiskhati Basilica, (6th c) is one of the oldest churches of Tbilisi. The first foundation dates back to 4th c. and is connected with the adoption of Christianity in Georgia. Mtatsminda: "The Holy Mountain" is at the altitude of 729 m above the sea level, with a leading position over the city. The first name dates back to the 6th c and is linked with the name of monk David who according led a secluded life there. Near the Saint David’s church there is a pantheon of famous Georgian public figures.
