Golden Fleece Coming from Turkey to Georgia Thirty-three centuries ago, Jason sailed off in a galley "Argo" with a group of Greek Heroes in search for the Golden Fleece in ancient Colchis Kingdom, ruled by powerful Ayetes; it was situated on present day's Georgian territory. Jason found here not only Golden Fleece but fell in love with Medea, Ayetes daughter. We will be following the steps of Argonauts: From the Black Sea Port City of Batumi, where Medea's brother was captured by Greek solders in the Gonio fortress, we will drive to the uplands, to the astonishing majesty of Svaneti region, located on the southern slopes of the Great Caucasus Range. Day by day itinerary Day 1. Sarpi-Batumi Group meets with local guide at Turkey - Georgia border and drive to Batumi. Accommodation at the hotel and lunch at the restaurant. You will have a wonderful opportunity to tast western Georgian wine. Overnight in Batumi. Day 2. Batumi After Breakfast at the hotel visit Excursion to the antique Gonio Fortress, where the fort of Roman legions was located in 1st c. Visit Batumi Ethnographical museum. Walk in Batumi Botanical Garden, where are collected plants from all parts of the world. In the evening walk along the Black Sea shore. Overnight in Batumi. Day 3. Batumi - Zugdidi - Mestia Breakfast at the hotel We will start driving to Mestia. Then drive to Zugdidi, administrative center of Samegrelo region. After the excursion at Dadiani Palace and lunch at local restaurant, we will change the coach for local (Russian) jeeps and drive to Mestia - very picturesque drive along the Engury River You will find yourself in the realm of the towers, surrounded by the Caucasus mountains, glaciers, high peaks and roaring waterfalls. Visit little churches with frescoes from10 th -12th cc. in villages Latali and lenjeri. Dinner and Overnight at Mestia Guesthouse. Day 4. Mestia After breakfast we will visit Mestia Ethnographical Museum with excellent collection of 11th -12th cc. icons and ancient manuscripts. Then easy walk and picnic lunch in Becho gorge. Dinner and Overnight at Mestia Guesthouse. Day 5: Mestia - Ushguli The way to Ushguli is extremely attractive. You will be crossing the villages Ipari and Kala, where the spirit of medieval life is too strong and where the small churches comprise beautiful frescos inside of them. Picnic lunch on the route. We'll walk in village Ushguli which is included in UNESCO world heritage sites. Dinner and Overnight at Ushguli Guesthouse. Day 6. Ushguli - Mestia After breakfast we'll visit Ushguli Ethnographical Museum located in the Svan tower, Lamaria church. Then drive to Mestia. Picnic lunch on route. Dinner and Overnight at Mestia Guesthouse. Day 7. Mestia-Nokalakevi-Kutaisi After breakfast we'll drive from Mestia to Kutaisi, the second largest city in Georgia, famous for its hospitality and delicious cuisine. The first stop is at Nokalakevi fortress, In 1st c. This town was the capital of West Georgian Kingdom Egrisi. Then we'll drive to Kutaisi which according to ancient Greek legend about the Argonauts from 12th c. B.C. was the capital of Colchis Kingdom. Later we will visit the ruins of Bagrati Cathedral (11th c) in the center of the city. Both monuments are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Dinner and Overnight at Kutaisi Guesthouse Day 8. Kutaisi - Borjomi- Bakuriani After breakfast we will travel to explore Gelati Monastery Complex included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites - building of 12th century Academy, Cathedral of 12th c. with beautiful frescos and famous mosaics. Then we'll continue traveling to east, pass Rikoti Pass - natural border dividing eastern and western Georgia. On our way we will visit 9th century chapel in the village Ubisa and observe wonderful frescos from 14th century. Lunch near the Rikoti pass. We will walk in the Borjomi- Kharagauli National Park and enjoy mineral waters in Spa city Borjomi. Then drive to mountain resort Bakuriani. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Bakuriani Day 9. Bakuriani-Vardzia- Bakuriani Travel South, to one of the most wonderful places of Meskheti province. This day offers travelers an opportunity to explore 12th c cave city Vardzia, carved into the volcanic rocks on 13 levels, linked inside by internal corridors, secrete tunnels, painted chapels. All day we will drive along Kura riverside. We will visit Khertvisi fortress on our way. Picnik lunch near the site. Dinner and overnight in Bakuriani Day 10. Bakuriani -Gori- Tbilisi After breakfast we'll drive to town Gori - the heart of the Kartli region - where Soviet Dictator Stalin was born. We will visit Stalin's house-museum. Explore cave-town Uplistsikhe (from 10th c. B.C.). After that we'll drive to visit two UNESCO world heritage sites: Jvari Monastery 6th c & Svetitskhoveli Cathedral 11th c in Mtskheta, the old capital town of Georgia. The old capital is located in 22 km from Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi Day 11 Tbilisi full day Full day city tour, visit Old and new districts, Museum of Archaeology, Narikala Fortress (4th century); Sulfur bathes; Metekhi church (13th century); Anchiskhati basilica (6th century); Rustaveli Avenue, Funicular, Art Museum, Ethnographical museum. Overnight in Tbilisi Day 12. Transfer to Tbilisi airport. Sights to visit: Batumi: Gonio fortress, botanical garden, state museum Zugdidi: Dadiani Palace Svaneti: medieval defensive towers and churches famous by mural frescoes in Latali, Lenjeri, Nakipari, Kala villages. UNESCO site village Ushguli 2200 m above sea level, State Ethnographical Museum in Mestia Gori: Stalin's house-museum, UNESCO sites: in Kutaisi: Bagrati Cathedral 11th Gelati Academy and monastery 12th , in Mtskheta Jvari church 6th , Svetitskhoveli cathedral 12th Cave cities: Uplistsikhe from 10th c. B.C., Vardzia 12th Fortresses: Narikhala 4th in Tbilisi, Khertvisi 10th in Javakheti, Nokalakevi From 6th c. B.C.in Samegrelo region. Botjomi-Kharagauli National Park and mineral springs Archaeological site Nokalakhevi from 7-6th BC Easy walking on the days 4, 6, 8 in Svaneti Becho village, foot-hills of Shkhara glacier and Borjomi-Kharagauli National Pack.
