Day by day itinerary Day 1. Meeting and transfer from TBS airport. Tbilisi - Gori - Kutaisi We drive to the town of Gori - the heart of the Kartli region -where Soviet Dictator Stalin was born. Gori is a small city, 80 km from Tbilisi, it takes about 50 min to drive from Tbilisi to Gori. We will visit Stalin's house-museum. Excursion takes about 30 min. Explore Uplistsikhe caves (1st century BC) located 12 km away from Gori and it takes about 15 min to drive on a back road to the caves. The excursion will last for 40 min. After that we travel to the West via Rikoti pass - the land of the Golden Fleece. Lunch on the route, at a local restaurant. We can make several stops on our way: there is a pottery market on the driveway, selling baskets, honey, mushrooms. Drive to the second largest city in Georgia: Kutaisi, famous for its hospitality, delicious cuisine and special dishes such as Imeretian cheese pie, Khachapuri. Dinner and Overnight at Kutaisi Guesthouse Day 2: Kutaisi - Zugdidi - Mestia Kutaisi is the jumping point to the beginning of Svaneti trip. After o/n stay and Breakfast in the family guesthouse, we will start driving to Mestia. The first stop is Zugdidi, administrative center of Samegrelo region. After the excursion at Dadiani Palace and lunch at local restourant, we will change the coach for local (Russian) jeeps and drive to Mestia - very picturesque and dramatic drive along the Engury River. It takes about four hours to drive from Zugdidi to Mestia, the road is in a bad shape and it is the reason we are changing the coach for Jeeps. Three person per NIVA, soviet jeep. Dinner and Overnight at Mestia Guesthouse Day 3: Mestia-Ushguli-Mestia You will find yourself in the realm of the towers, surrounded by the Caucasus mountains, glaciers, high peaks and roaring waterfalls. The way to Ushguli is extremely attractive. You will be crossing the villages Ipari and Kala, where the spirit of medieval life is too strong and where the small churches comprise beautiful frescos inside of them. Picnic lunch on the route Evening Drive back for Dinner and Overnight at Mestia Guesthouse Day 4: Mestia -Zugdidi - Kutaisi After breakfast at the family guesthouse, visit Mestia State Museum and drive back to Zugdidi. Picnic Lunch on the rout. In Zugdidi we will change the jeeps for coach and drive to Kutaisi. Evning we will visit two UNESCO world heritage sites: splendid Bagrati Cathedral ruins (11th c), located in Kutaisi city center on top of the hill and Gelati Monastery and Academy (12th c) with beautiful mosaics inside, situated 8 km from Kutaisi. Dinner and Overnight at Kutaisi Guesthouse Day 5: Kutaisi-Rikoti Pass -Borjomi Park-Bakuriani Breakfast at the Kutaisi guesthouse Drive to the Spa city Borjomi, visit the National Park, where we can taste famous mineral spring water Borjomi. We will have a lunch at a local restaurant to taste Khinkali, the favorite dish of mountain people. Drive to the Ski resort Bakuriani for O/N in the hotel I would like to inform you: Borjomi is a very nice spa, Soviet Government's favorite place, even Stalin used to stay there. Before the establishment of Soviet Union, Borjomi served as Russian King's residence. As an option, we can stay for o/n in Borjomi hotel. Bakuriani is located 32 km from Borjomi, up in the mountains, 1650 m above sea level. Dinner and O/N in Bakuriani hotel Day 6: Bakuriani-Borjomi-Akhaltsikhe-Vardzia-Bakuriani The buffet breakfast at the hotel This day offers travelers an opportunity to explore 12th c cave city Vardzia, carved into the volcanic rocks on 13 levels, linked inside by internal corridors, secrete tunnels, painted chapels. All day we will drive along different medieval fortresses by Kura riverside and have the picnic lunch on our way. The rout is picturesque and pleasant. You will enjoy full day exploration of Javakheti region. Picnic lunch near the site. Dinner and O/N in Bakuriani hotel Day 7. Bakuriani - Tbilisi The buffet breakfast at the hotel Drive to visit two UNESCO world heritage sites: Jvari Monastery 6th c & Svetitskhoveli Cathedral 11th c in Mtskheta, the old capital town of Georgia. The old capital is located in 22 km from Tbilisi. Lunch on the route, at a local restaurant. Free evening Dinner and O/N in Tbilisi Day 8. Breakfast at the hotel Full day city tour, visit Old and new districts, Old Synagogue; Museum of Archaeology, Narikala Fortress (4th century); Sulfur bathes; Metekhi church (13th century); Anchiskhati basilica (6th century); Rustaveli Avenue, Funicular In the evening, check out from the hotel, Transfer to TBS airport departure. Sights to visit: Zugdidi: Dadiani Palace Svaneti: medieval self-defenceive towers and churches famous by mural frescoes in Latali, Lemjeri, Nakipari, Kala villages.
