Combined group tour to 3 South Caucasus countries – Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia is a 14 days special itinerary with fixed guaranteed dates. You start the journey from Baku, the capital town of Azerbaijan, continue the way to Georgia, visiting Sighnaghi, Tbilisi, Gudauri and Akhaltsikhe, do the round trip in Armenia from Bavra border to Gymri and Yerevan and then return back to Georgia from Sadakhlo border to Tbilisi.
Three experienced guides will work for you –one local guide in each country. Day to day itinerary
Day 1: BAKU
In the morning our team will organize your pick up from the hotel to the group location. Tour Starts at 10:00 am. You will join the groups for Baku sightseeing: first visit place is Mountain park for the splendid Panoramic views of the city and Baku Bay. Walk along the alley and then drive to the downtown. There are main historical sites there: the medieval sight of the Old City (11-19 cc) (fortifications, Shirvanshakhs Palace(14-15 cc., entrance), Karvansaray (14-15 cc.), old mosques 11-19cc.), old bath, narrow small streets, art shops and bench of handicraftsmen,”Giz Galasi” (Maiden Tower entrance). In the evening Free time for leisure. Overnight in Baku hotel.
Day 2: BAKU-SHEKI
Breakfast at the group hotel. Today we start the route to the North-West –to the town Sheki. On the route you will enjoy historical monuments: Mountain Mausoleum “Diri-Baba” (Sufism’s Temple), Shemakha Mosque 11c . Continue excursions in Sheki: Sheki Fortress, Sheki Khan Palace, Caravanserai and Mosque. Overnight in Sheki hotel.
Day 3: SHEKI-SIGHNAGHI
After breakfast you start morning excursion in Kish village and visit Alban Church.
Drive to the Azerbaijan-Georgia border Lagodekhi. It will take approximately one hour and 40 minutes. The guide will help with border crossing procedures, change transport and guide and continue the trip to Georgia.
From the border we need about 1 hour to Signagi. Sighnaghi is a small medieval town in Georgia, located on the hilltop overlooking Alazani Valley and Kakheti region. The town has another name - “City of Love”, as the wedding palace works 24 h every day and the environment around is very nice and welcoming.
Kakheti area is a main wine-producing region in Georgia. Signagi and its surroundings are home for numerous cultural and architectural monuments. Visit Signagi small and lovely museum with archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, photographic and paintings’ collections. One of Georgia’s prominent artist of naive art – Niko Pirosmanashvili – is presented in the museum main hall. In the evening walk nearby the 17th c city wall and towers of Signagi. Overnight in Signagi hotel.
Day 4: SIGHNAGHI- VELISTSIKHE – TSINANDALI – SHUMI - TELAVI – TBILIS
Today You start exploration of Georgian wine culture. After breakfast drive to Velistsikhe village. It is one of the well preserved oldest wine cellars in Georgia from 16th c and belongs to the local family. Here you will taste Georgian Kvevri wines. According to the Georgian traditions, Kvevri wines are fermented in an underground clay amphorae and has a very unique smell and taste. Georgian homemade vodka – Chacha is produced from the grapes, which went through the first fermentation stage together with wine.
Next drive to Tsinandali, where you’ll visit the house-museum of Kakheti nobleman Alexandre Chavchavadze. You’ll have excursion at the residence, English-French garden and wine cellar located in the museum with a glass of famous Tsinandali wine.
Continue to Shumi winery located just few minutes from Tsinandali museum. Visit the wine museum “Vazioni” located in the winery and taste the local wines with light snacks.
Continue to Telavi town, the center of Kakheti and former capital town of Eastern Georgia. Take a walk in Telavi central avenue, Batonistsikhe, visit 900 years maple tree and 500 year grape tree.
In the evening drive to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia via Gombori range and Pass. Overnight in Tbilisi hotel.
Day 5: TBILISI CITY TOUR
We start Tbilisi full day sightseeing from the main cathedral nearby the presidential residence of Georgia. Holy Trinity (Sameba) Cathedral is the highest among the Christian Orthodox churches (103m below the dome). Beautiful yard with unique flowers and fountains makes the entrance of the cathedral very beautiful.
Next stop is Metekhi plateau, located on the rocky cliff above the River Kura. This was the first royal residence in 5th c. Equestrian bronze statue of the King Vakhtang IV Gorgasali - the founder of the city – erected in front of the Old Town. Take a nice walk on small streets: Shardeni street, Iron Row and Cotton Row. You can see the small sculpture of Tamada- the toast master- en-route. Continue the walking towards the King Erekle II Street – there are nice outdoor cafes, bars, art galleries and souvenir shops there. Cross the glass Bridge of Peace. Get in the aerial cable car and ride up to the oldest fortress of 4th c Narikala. Stroll down by foot to the Botanical Street, 19th c mosque, small canyon and waterfall in Legvtakhevi area. Continue walking to the Abanotubani. The underground domed architecture of Ottoman’s time sulfur bathhouses gives Tbilisi oriental appearance. Here you have real feeling you are on the edge of the two great continents: Europe and Asia. See the building of multicolor bath (Chreli Abano), facade looks as Medresse with its faience and Majolica ornaments. It was the favorite one for Russian poet and classic Alexander Pushkin. Finish the old city tour at Maidan square. Overnight in Tbilisi hotel.
Day 6: TBILISI –MTSKHETA-ANANURI- GUDAURI
After breakfast at the hotel you drive to Mtskheta - ancient capital town of Eastern Georgian Kingdom to view two UNESCO sites: Jvari church 6th c and Svetitskhoveli cathedral 11th c. There are souvenir shops, wine cellars, handicraft salons along the narrow streets of Mtskheta. Town is located on the confluence of two rivers and has a very nice location.
Now let’s follow the Northern rout – the former Silk Road. Nowadays the road is named as Georgian Military highway and leads towards the Great Caucasus range. Stop at Jinvali water reserve, short excursion at Ananuri castle of 16-17th cc. The complex comprises three churches, fortress, tunnels, towers and residential buildings of local Dukes.
Evening arrival in ski resort Gudauri (the altitude 2000 m above Sea level) for dinner and overnight.
Day 7: GUDAURI-KAZBEGI - TBILISI
After breakfast start full day exploration of high Caucasus Mountains; You will reach highest point on the driveway 2395 m on the Cross Pass, near the watershed you can see red travertine mount and taste mineral water. Observe snowy peaks of beautiful mountains and waterfalls, visit the top of the Mount Gergeti, Holy Trinity Church 14th c. the Stepantsminda village and see the magnificent peak of Kazbegi glacier 5033m (if the weather is clear). In the evening drive back to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi hotel.
Day 8: TBILISI-GORI-UPLISTSIKHE-BORJOMI -AKHALTSIKHE
After breakfast check out and drive to Samtskhe via main Kartli region. First stop is Gori town, the heart of Kartli and the birthplace of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Museum consists of memorial house, where Stalin was born, exposition building with tower and Stalin’s personal coach with interior (he had travelled to Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam). Museum houses Stalin’s personal items, study room of Kremlin, manuscripts, gifts from over the world.
Drive to the village Uplistskhe 14 km away from Gori. Here, there are the oldest inhabited caves cut in limestone rocks and date back to the Early Iron Age. The town had temples, wealthy people’s district with outdoor amphitheater and stage, small and big marketplace, poor peoples’ dwellings, jails, secret tunnels and passes connecting ancient chambers and halls. Small museum is attached to the site and you can see 8 minutes movie about Uplistsikhe caves.
Next stop is a town Borjomi –famous for its curative sparkling mineral waters. The natural artesian springs are coming to the surface without pumping. After tasting Borjomi sparkling water, walk through Borjomi-Kharagauli national park – one of the largest protected areas in Europe, which covers 5300 sq. Km and has unique eco diversity and wildlife.
In the evening arrival in Akhaltsikhe town Samtskhe region (formerly known as Lomsia). Overnight in Akhaltsikhe hotel.
Day 9: AKHALTSIKHE-VARDZIA-BAVRA-GYUMRI
Akhaltsikhe means “New Castle”. After the breakfast, visit Rabati – the medieval Castle situated on the rocky inn. Excursion covers museum, Sargis Jakeli castle of 14th c., Fortress Church (late Middle Ages), Palace of 18th century and the Church of Saint Marine (1865) with built-in relief works.
At noon drive to Vardzia, a rock-hewn caves on the left bank of the River Mtkvari. Founded in the reign of the King Giorgi III and his daughter Queen Tamar (12th -13th c.c.), Vardzia was planned as a town-fortress and became a well-fortified 13th level monastery. Vardzia played a significant role in political, cultural, educational and spiritual life of the country.
Afterwards drive to Georgia - Armenian border Bavra. Border formalities, transport and guide change. Drive to Gyumri. Gyumri is the second largest city that used to be an important Armenian cultural center in the late 19th early 20th century. Overnight in Gyumri.
Day 10: GYUMRI-EJMIATSIN-ZVARTNOC-YEREVAN
After breakfast, sightseeing in Gyumri. We will take a walk through its historical center (Alexandropol) that has many traditional 19th-century houses and visit a museum located in one of them. Departure from Gyumri. We’ll continue the tour to the center of Armenian-Apostolic Church in Echmiadzin. Visit to Zvartnoc. Drive to Yerevan and visit to Manuscript museum Matenadaran. Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 11: YEREVAN-GARNI-GEGHARD-YEREVAN
After breakfast, excursion around Yerevan city. Explore the History museum. The History museum is situated at the Republic Square, in the center of the city. Museum can give you a good general understanding of the history and culture of Armenian’s people. Visit to the Geghard Monastery The exact foundation of the monastery is unknown, the present complex was built in the mid – 13th century. You will walk along the canyon, by the beautiful columnar basalt 9th century stone bridge over the Azat River to Garni the Pagan Temple, built in the 1 Century AD. In 1679, it was destroyed by earthquake. In the 1975, the Temple was restored. Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 12: YEREVAN-KHOR VIRAP-ARENI-NORAVAK-YEREVAN
Breakfast at the hotel. Take a trip to Khor Virap Monastery (4-18th cc.). This monastery is prominent because of its history; Gregory the Illuminator, who introduced Christianity to Armenia, has been imprisoned there about 13 years as at that time there was a prison in the place of the monastery. Enjoy the spectacular view of the sacred Ararat Mountain.
After Khor Virap continue the tour to the Armenian Wine Village Areni. This village is famous producing red wine. Visit the wine factory of the village and have wine degustation. Visit to Noravank - a monastery of 12th c is situated among amazing sheer rocks on the bench of a twisty gorge. This is the only monastery where we may find a unique sculpture of Father God. Return to Yerevan for overnight.
Day 13: YEREVAN-SEVAN-SANAHIN-HAGPAT-SADAKHLO - TBILISI
Breakfast. Today program is a trip to Lake Sevan, one of the world’s largest high-altitude lakes (2000 meters above the sea level). Sevan Lake has become a well-known vacation spot. Then we will drive to Dilijan. Passing by the city, visit the Sharamberyan Street, considered a symbol of "The Old Dilijan" is now still charming with its artistic workshops, small shops that have exposure in Armenian traditional objects and souvenirs, the museum, which has a house nineteenth century decorated with local furniture. Two traditional houses in the historic Sharamberyan Street, built of wood, with tiled roofs and balconies with meticulously carved being typical examples of Dilijan, have been restored. Visit to the medieval Sanahin Monastery 10th -13th cc.( UNESCO site), which is comprised to several churches and chapel. Visit Haghpat Monastery 10th -13th cc. The construction of this monastery is associated with the glory of the Bagratuni Royal Family. The oldest structure of the monastery, the holy Cross Church was built in 977 -911. Drive to Armenia-Georgia border Sadakhlo. Meet with Georgian team at 18:00. Transfer to Tbilisi. Relaxing evening. Farewell dinner in Georgian Traditional restaurant with folk show* (Optional). Overnight in Tbilisi hotel.
