Mose Toidze 1871-1953

Georgian painter, graphic, academician and professor of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. Owner of the Lenin medal and the Badge of Honor medal.

Mose Toidze museum houses paintings and graphics of the artist, photo and documentary materials (more than 2.000 items), as well as works of his son – painter Irakli Toidze. The museum has the Cultural-Educational Psycho-Rehabilitation Training Centre, are held charitable projects. 

Mose Toidze  1896 Leaves Tbilisi for St. Petersburg and begins his artistic study in L. Dimitriev-Kavkazski’s art school, under the tuition of P. Maliavin. Afterwards continues studying at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and simultaneously works at I. Repin’s Studio.
His Diploma Work “Mtskhetoba” was awarded with Golden Medal.
During 1903 - 1904 participated in the “Peredvijniki” (Wanderers) spring exhibition and in the exhibition of Caucasus artists.
1922 founded Tbilisi Public Art Studio and headed the Studio until 1930

Participation in revolutionary and education activities determined democratic orientation of Toidze’s creative work. His paintings reflect the bright distinguishing scenes of everyday life of the Georgian people, later works show the socialist construction and the events of the Great Patriotic War. 


The memorial museum dedicated to the life and work of the artist was opened in Toidze’s apartment in Tbilisi in 1968. It contains master’s paintings and drawings, his personal letters and publications. The rich book library, ethnographic materials, portraits and photographs of writers; movie and theater actors’ were preserved. The museum also exhibits artworks of such artists as Valentin Krotkov, Eugene Kibrik, Boris Phogel and Khalilbek Musayev.


Since 2005 the museum of Mose Toidze is part of the Georgian National Museum Complex.
