  • Saint Mikheil tvereli church

At the foot of Mtatsminda Mountain, on Zaldastanishvili Street, the Russian St. Mikheil Tvereli Church, constructed in 1911-1913 is located. The author of the idea of the construction was the Great Russian chief Mikheil Romanov, the church was constructed with the order of the general-governor of the Caucasus Ilarion Vorontsov-Dashkov and his spouse. The church is of a hall type, roofed with a spherical, eight windowed domes in the east side. The latter is supported by the protruding of the apse and northern and southern walls that are divided with the deep bows creating a kind of rhythm. The interior is plastered in light blue color, on the simple background, the high golden iconostasis and the similar stars in the sphere of the dome are sharply noticeable. There are three entrances in the church, and they are symmetrically disposed in the center of the southern façade and westward of the northern and southern walls. The bowed portico supported with a couple of columns and semi columns are arranged in front of each entrance. On the top of the apses, the small domed broach spire is erected, this sort of small dome is built on the bell tower, that is connected with the interior with stairs built in the western wall of the church (the same stairs lead to the balcony of choir).

The relief frames of the complex profile are sharply observed on the façade, at the same time the exterior is not overwhelmed with architectural elements and the facades are simple. The upper part of the church is much more decorated: two rows of the gables, the rectangular basis of the dome, divided with bows and a narrow barrel crowned with the small dome is erected on it.

The refectory is arranged westward in the high socle of the church. All the three silver colored domes of the church are of ‘onion’ shape according to the Russian traditions. The church is whitewashed and is well seen even from the far distance.
