  • Old sameba church

St Sameba (Holy Trinity) church is located behind the National museum on G. Robakidze Street. The first church here was built by Petre Aghniashvili in 1790 (he was appointed as a Ghartiskari watch by the King Erekle the II and he was defending Tbilisi from Dagestanian attack). Later in 1832 his grandchild, a priest Svimon (Shio) Aghniashvili built the western gate to the construction and in 1850 a church tower was placed on it at his own will. After a little while the church was totally renovated. In 1990 a low extension was constructed in the north and south, near the western portico.

The dome of the ‘inscribed cross’ type church is based on the protruding of apses and on two columns. The apse is drafted in the rectangular and is not allocated on the façade. Here the forms characteristic for the Georgian architecture and classicist element are blended. On the eastern façade, on both sides of apses triangle niches are intruded that is characteristic for the medieval centuries.

On the top of a central window placed in the arch, like an arch, a high relief cross is depicted. On both sides of it the symmetric niches are located on the top of which two round apertures are placed, and the third such aperture is placed under the pediment. The façade is enriched with rosettes.

On the western façade the western European elements are observed. The portico with four Dorian columns is arranged in the center. On their top, parallel to the arches the rectangular niches with a round aperture in the middle are located. The central niche is crowned with a small pediment and the cross made of the flat deepening of the wall is supported by the letter one. The composition is accomplished with an arch type church tower.

The north and south facades are alike and two connected windows are in the center the third one is supported by a slim column that is placed between the windows. All the three ones are surrounded with a high arch. Single windows are placed on the edges. The corners are neighbored by the narrow helmet type niches; round windows are located under the pediment. The western side is decorated by the small decorative arches with equal edged crosses among them.

The dome windows are surrounded by the arches. Circles and triangles are curved in the deep rectangular places under the cornice. Proportions, high forms, symmetry, moderate decorations, a kind of eclecticism are the main characteristics of the church.
