  • Jvarismama

St. Cross Church known as Jvarismama, is located in lower Kala at the crossing point of Leselidze and Jerusalem streets. According to the legend the construction of the first church on this place is linked with the King Vakhtang Gorgasali. St. Cross Church, constructed in the second half of the 5th century, belongs to the Patriarchy of Jerusalem and resembles the church of Lord’s tomb on Golgotha and for a long time was competing with the Georgian churches in Jerusalem.

The church that has come up today was built in the 16th century; in 1825 it was repaired by the desire of the abbot Benedict (further an episcope of Bethlehem in Palestine). It was demolished in 1920 and was restored and based on the previous fundament in 1999-2000.

The book-ware house was arranged in the church during the Soviet regime, in 1983 the reconstruction of the nearby territory of Jvarismama was carried out: all the residential houses and taverns near it were removed; the book-ware house was also removed from the place. The church has been functioning again since 1989.

The church built with brick is of ‘Kupelhale’ type, the dome is supported with an apse and with the protruding of southern and northern walls. The profiled belt and the impost on the abutment level of arches and vaults enrich the integral entire space and underline the artistic character.

Outside image of the church is a simple cross-dome. Four armed church covered with two sided roof, gets the shape of a cross. On their crossing point, in the center, a wide, twelve angled dome is erected.

The decoration of the facades is simple, three crosses, made by the deepening of the wall flatness, are depicted on the eastern, southern and northern walls. Only two such crosses are placed on the western wall, on both sides of the window. The decorative helmet type arch is located under the pediment. The dome windows are surrounded with arcade, supported by semi columns.
