  • Geguti church

Building process of the royal residence in Geguti began in 7-8th centuries and was accomplished in 13th century. The palace was reconstructed several times, but it was badly preserved and now it needs restoration again. At the beginning, it represented a hunting house (shooting-box) with a huge fire-place, and, later on, it became part of multi-room palace, crowned with a dome, the diameter of which constituted 14 meters. Royal chambers and a bedroom were located in south-western part of the building and treasury – in south eastern part. Palace church and bath-house were disposed in north-western part.

Many centuries ago, public affairs were settled here; big and small receptions were held and the pulse of strong feudal state was strongly beating here. According to the annalist, King David the Builder arrived to Geguti in autumn, in 1123. He was hunting, resting and settling all the public affairs there. In March he returned to Kartli. Queen Tamar liked to visit Geguti together with her ministers. Namely here, in 1178, King George III announced his daughter co-ruler. Later on, Geguti is mentioned in annals of 1360 in connection with untimely death of the son of King George the Splendid, David III.
